As the school year kicks into high gear and fall sports are full swing, experts recommend parents take measures to protect their children’s spinal health. Backpacks and electronic devices can pose a threat to your child’s backs, necks, and shoulders if used improperly.
According to HealthDay (August 2015), “In 2013, there were more than 5,400 backpack related injuries treated in emergency rooms in the United States. Dr. Scott Bautch, a member of the American Chiropractic Association’s Council on Occupational Health, advises that a backpack should no more than 5-10% of a child’s weight and should never be wider or longer than the torso (base of neck to waist). When using electronic devices, children should look down with their eyes and try not to bend their necks. It is important to remember that spinal pain in children is not normal, and a child who complains of either back pain or neck pain should be evaluated by a qualified healthcare provider.”
Dr. Elledge examines new adult patients consistently that have never had their spines examined nor had preventative imagining performed. Being proactive and conscious are the keys to maintaining a healthy spine and encouraging proper motion. The earlier a problem is detected, the easier it can be corrected!
As more and more patients bring their children in for a spinal check-up, hopefully all of our patients see the extreme benefit in identifying and correcting spinal issues, such as scoliosis, neck and posture problems, or gait, hip and balance issues, before children reach skeletal maturity. Think about how many hundreds or thousands of times your child has taken a fall, or been involved in a collision, especially if they are involved with sports. Children respond to gentle chiropractic care very quickly and can enjoy the lifelong benefits of having a properly moving spine and optimal functioning nervous system!!
